Travel report: Berchtesgaden, Germany

'Hitler' and 'beautiful' shouldn't go in the same sentence, but I still don't know quite how to explain the juxtaposition of Hitler's Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) with the magic mountain scenery.

So you see, we haven't even left German soil yet and our trip is already fascinating us. Three days' camping near Berchtesgaden have given us the full range of everything, even weather: 30C shorts-and-T-shirt hours, a 15C raincoat day and even a glimpse of leftover snow when we hiked to the Eiskapelle at Königssee. The only downside of this German holiday playground, Berchtesgadenerland, is the masses of tourists, so we'll head east tomorrow and hope to find a few more locals and a few less postcards for sale.
